About
Communications expertise, built for the AI era.
Be Cited was founded by Melanie Defries, a strategic communications consultant with 20 years' experience across B2B journalism, PR, brand positioning and European technology communications.
The question Be Cited was built to answer is a simple one: if your brand has real credibility, why isn't AI search reflecting that?
Melanie Defries, Founder
AI visibility, approached through communications
Much of the early advice around AI visibility has come from the SEO world, with a focus on technical signals, schema markup and content structure. Be Cited takes a different view. The brands that get cited in AI-generated answers are the ones that have built genuine authority, clear narratives and credible third-party recognition. Technical foundations matter, but on their own they are rarely enough. Getting cited is as much a communications problem as a technical one, and it needs to be treated that way.
Melanie Defries started her career in B2B journalism, spending five years on the other side of the story, deciding what was credible enough to cover and what wasn't. That editorial perspective shapes everything about how Be Cited approaches AI visibility: what makes a source trustworthy, what makes a claim credible, and what makes a brand the obvious answer to a question.
She went on to lead communications for European technology businesses, including several years leading the communications team at Pod Point (now Pod), the EV charging company, from scale-up through to post-IPO. In that role she directly secured coverage in The Times, Bloomberg and a range of national and international outlets. Later work at Easee and Accessiway involved leading communications programmes across multiple European markets.
The brands that struggle with AI visibility often don't lack credibility. Their credibility simply isn't structured in a way that AI systems can identify, interpret and cite.
Be Cited exists to fix that, primarily through the kind of strategic communications work that builds lasting authority: clear positioning, credible content, earned media and narrative structure that makes sense to both human readers and AI systems.
Media coverage secured or supported by Melanie's work
The Times and Bloomberg were secured directly during her time at Pod Point; the wider European coverage came through communications programmes she led at Easee and Accessiway.
